Brueder Selke

“It’s an extraordinary piece of music. It’s the work of two brothers, Sebastian on cello and Daniel on piano. I saw them premiere tracks from their new album at a gig that I went to in Berlin. This is a project which is written about the buildings that surrounded them in their childhood, growing up on the streets of East Berlin.“ Mary Anne Hobbs, BBC Radio 6 Music “Hausmusik is an album by the Selke brothers – Sebastian on cello and Daniel on piano. On tracks such as Fallen they create metronomic, Nyman-ish miniatures that sound as if they’ve been plotted on graph paper; tracks like Reunion see them jabber rhythmically, with Sebastian playing pizzicato; elsewhere they explore texture – creaking strings, bashed wood, triple stopping – over minimal one-chord drones with a horror-movie intensity.” John Lewis, The Guardian There is a unique feel of duality within the manner in which the poly-instrumental composer duo BRUEDER SELKE, Sebastian Selke and his younger brother, Daniel Selke, combine their instruments cello and piano. Through their traditional classical training and interest in contemporary ideas, they started anonymously under their alias CEEYS to create a continuing narrative around their upbringing in the former Communist-era GDR and its associated architectural and societal landscapes that shaped them as musicians and people. “We are trying to come to terms with our memories and impressions regarding Europe’s largest prefab estate back in those historically and emotionally charged, conflicting times.”
