He graduated the piano and conductorship (in the class of Milan Sachs and Friedrich Zaun) at the Music Academy in Zagreb. From 1969 until 1975 he was the headmaster of the [a=ORF Symphonieorchester]. Horvat was also a lifetime Honorary Principal Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. Horvat died in Innsbruck, Austria on the 1st of January 2014 at the age of 94. Some of his earlier recordings were fraudulently used by [a=Alfred Scholz], who falsely credited them to fake orchestras like the [a=Philharmonia Slavonica] and falsely crediting the conductor to fake conductors like [a=Henry Adolph], [a=Alberto Lizzio], [a=Alexander von Pitamic], [a=Denis Zsoltay], [a=Hymisher Greenburg], or to [a=Alfred Scholz] himself.
