Pablo "Payo" Alicea died on March 22, 1995 in Manhattan, NY. Percussionist, guitarist, musical director and founder of one of the Latin music institutions most famous of the island of enchantment, ambassador of the mambo, the cha cha cha, the guaracha, the son and the pachanga, we refer to [a=La Playa Sextet]. Self-taught musician, he debuted professionally in the great orchestra of maestro Rafael Muñoz Medina -recorded as the orchestra conductors' orchestra- that set the exclusive Escambron Beach Club. After graduating from the great musical institution of Mr. Rafael Muñoz, he settled in the United States where he found a seat in different jazz bands such as Paul Whitman with which he starred in the famous CBS program entitled "The Greatest Band of America". There he met his eternal partner, the vocalist [a=Marie Alicea], who accampanied him during this musical journey, and with her and the guitarist Francisco "Frank" Sánchez formed the sextet in 1947, initially as a quartet that played in the famous club China Doll (Former Club La Conga), and becoming a powerful sextet made up of guitars, trumpets, bass and percussion.
