British folk singer, and guitarist. Born January 11, 1958 in Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland, Janet Russell is as well-known for her with Sisters Unlimited as she is for her solo performances. Following an early career singing in the clubs of Edinburgh, Russell went on to support a number of major artists at the Edinburgh Folk and Fringe Festivals from 1980-1983. She also performed and recorded with Christine Kydd, performing on Folk on 2 for the BBC, and releasing Janet Russell & Christine Kydd on Greentrax Records in 1987. Russell’s first solo outing followed with 1988's Gathering the Fragments on Harbourtown Records. It was well received and gained airplay on both folk and non-folk radio. She also performed on the Les Barker 1997 album The Stones of Callanish. She continues to record solo albums but the majority of her time is spent performing with Sisters Unlimited.
