Nik Weston

Weston has been running club nights in the UK since 1995. His Mukatsuku night launch with two friends in 1996, with the London Evening Standard nominating it as club night of the year in 1997. Since then, Weston has played initially on the jazz-dance or funk scene, spinning globally playing over 30 countries including tours of Japan, Australia and extensively throughout Europe. For four years he was monthly resident at Russ Dewbury's Jazz Rooms in Brighton, then later DJ'd regularly at various London venues including The Jazz Cafe and was the warm up for Gilles Peterson and Jazzanova residencies plus Ronnie Scott's, and a residency at Smiths in Farringdon. Over the last 10 years he has been one of the residents at South London Soul Train. Began by doing promotions for Island Records, where he stayed for five years, until starting consultancy at labels Verve and Universal Jazz. In 2001 he begun running promotional company Mukatsuku PR, while also doing A&R for the label Exceptional, & Counterpoint Records and freelance music consultant work for other labels plus having columns or writing for various magazines about the Japanese Music scene including Straight No Chaser, Breaking Point, IDJ Magazine & Plastiks (Belgium). In 2005, he started working while working at Juno Records (www.juno.co.uk), and became their Japanese music buyer setting up an office in Tokyo to consolidate stock from labels all over from Japan and then ship to Juno . In 2006, he started his label Mukatsuku Records. His first major DJ trip to Japan was in 2001 was as part of the Brasil Night's tour, with Victor Davies and Studio Apartment. He's also played on Tokyo's Shibuya FM, and guest on Jazztronik's radio show (Tokyo & Fukuoka), along with playing at the Room Club in Tokyo. Weston has also played at the Big Chill Festival at Eastnor Castle, and in 2004 did a BBC Radio 1 hour-long music special. He previously did two regular radio shows: one with Nigel Prankster called Forwardsbackwards on Milkaudio, the other Konnichi Wah Wah with Dom Servini on Samurai FM but the last few years he puts his music selections up on Mixcloud... https://www.mixcloud.com/Mukatsuku/ Weston has put out releases on 20 different labels with over 200 physical vinyl releases worldwide including 8 compilations . His own production & remixes have featured on labels including BBE (UK), Africa Seven (uk ) ,Kalita (UK), Emotional Rescue (UK/Japan) , Rocafort (Italy),Flee (Switzerland), Lastrum (Japan)& Village Again(Japan)….His own Mukatsuku vinyl only ,singles only label imprint launched in 2006 has had over 86 releases so far putting out quality new productions alongside classic hard to find reissues of Afro Funk, Soul, Funk ,Jazz, Reggae, Boogie, Hip Hop, Lovers Rock and Latin genres.
