Mikhail Fabianovich Gnesin

[b]Mikhail Gnesin[/b] or [b]Gnessin[/b] (2 February [i]{O.S. 21 January}[/i] 1883, Roston-on-Don, Russian Empire — 5 May 1957, Moscow, USSR), was a Russian-Jewish composer, musicologist, and music pedagogue, one of the founders of the [b]Society for Jewish Folk Music[/b]. He studied at the [l=St. Petersburg Conservatory] with [a=Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov], [a=Alexander Glazunov], and [a=Anatoly Liadov]. Mikhail's elder sisters [url=https://discogs.com/artist/6243873]Elena[/url] (1874—1967), Mariya Gnesina (1874/76—1918), and Evgeniya Savina-Gnesina (1871—1940) established the renowned [url=https://discogs.com/label/1654959]Gnessin State Musical College[/url] in 1895. Gnessin's works [i]The Maccabeans[/i] and [i]The Youth of Abraham[/i] earned him the "Jewish Glinka" nickname.
